Zambia
Johannesburg to Lusaka freight
Lusaka is a two-border corridor, and that is the whole story of this lane. Every load crosses twice, so a single documentation gap costs you time at both posts. Route choice between the Zimbabwe transit and the Kazungula bridge depends on cargo, season, and current queue conditions.
Distance
~1 600 km
Indicative transit
4 - 6 days
Mode
Full truckload
Border posts on this corridor
- Beitbridge (ZA/ZW) then Chirundu (ZW/ZM)
- Alternative: Kazungula (BW/ZM)
Two routes, one destination
The conventional route runs north through Beitbridge into Zimbabwe, up through Harare, and crosses into Zambia at Chirundu. This is the shorter option at roughly 1,600 km but it means a Zimbabwe transit, with the transit bond and the second clearance that implies.
The alternative runs west through Botswana and crosses the Zambezi at Kazungula. Since the bridge opened it has become a genuine option rather than a last resort, and it avoids the Zimbabwe transit entirely. It is longer, and we generally recommend it when Beitbridge or Chirundu queues are severe or when the cargo makes a Zimbabwe transit bond awkward.
We quote the route we would actually run and tell you why, rather than defaulting to whichever is cheaper on paper.
Chirundu and the one-stop post
Chirundu operates as a one-stop border post, with Zimbabwean and Zambian officials processing in a single facility. In principle this halves the clearance work. In practice it still backs up, particularly with northbound copper-belt traffic, and preparation matters as much as it does anywhere else on the network.
Zimbabwe transit requires a bond covering the goods while they cross the country. We arrange this as part of the file rather than leaving the driver to resolve it at the post.
What this lane suits
Lusaka volumes lean heavily toward mining and industrial supply, construction materials, and plant heading to the Copperbelt. We also run onward Zambian destinations including Ndola and Kitwe.
The distance and the double crossing make this a corridor where full truckload is the only sensible mode. Consolidated freight compounds every delay across two borders.

Johannesburg to Lusaka: common questions
How long does freight take from Johannesburg to Lusaka?
Indicatively 4 to 6 days. The corridor crosses two borders, so clearance rather than driving time is the main variable.
Should I route via Chirundu or Kazungula?
Chirundu via Zimbabwe is shorter and usually cheaper, but requires a Zimbabwe transit bond and two crossings in sequence. Kazungula via Botswana is longer but avoids the Zimbabwe transit. We recommend a route per load based on cargo and current queue conditions.
Do you need a transit bond through Zimbabwe?
Yes, for goods crossing Zimbabwe en route to Zambia. We arrange the bond as part of the clearance file before dispatch.
Do you deliver to the Copperbelt?
Yes. Ndola, Kitwe, and Copperbelt project sites are served as onward destinations from the same corridor.
